The other three rounds: Conditioning, Posing & Presentation and Model Walk (at Finals) went to Hernandez. However, the margins by which Karlos won his three yielded enough points to plant him firmly in the winners sport, also earning him the coveted IPL Men’s Athletic Pro Card. Hernandez in 2nd.
Also, at the SCC, Karlos would go on to earn 1st place spots in Sports Model Novice and Beach Body. AND, taking full advantage of the momentum, Karlos has hopped into the AZ Pro Men’s Athletic lineup going down on May 27th in Mesa Arizona. There, he will put himself to the test against the largest and most competitive Men’s Athletic Pro lineup to date. Including 1X IPL Pro Champion Zyrian Apurillo, top IPL Pro James Niezen, IPL Pro Alejandro Sigala and IPL Pro Zack Smith. BOOM!
BEN YOSEF: Congratulations on earning your Pro Card in SoCal! What a great showing for you! You were shredded, man! What was it like for you, winning that show?
KARLOS VELAZQUEZ: Winning the SoCal show was a feeling like no other. Lots of different emotions. Happy, excited, proud, accomplished…and maybe just a little disbelief. Overall awesome, considering all the hard work and discipline it took to get there. Needless to say, up to that point I was in the best shape of my life. I’ve struggled with being overweight all my life. I dropped over 35 pounds in my 15 week prep. I’ve always worked out, just never stuck to a clean diet.
BEN: Nice! What were some of the keys to you getting your physique to this level?
“…I WORKED SO HARD TO GET IN SHAPE, IT JUST MADE SENSE TO KEEP THE BALL ROLLING AND FINE TUNE FOR A PRO DEBUT. “
KARLOS: First of all my faith in God, and good health I’ve been blessed with. Second, my wife and family backing me up, helping with meals and taking care of our kids when it was time to go to the gym. Finally, but also very important, was my coach Ariel Alberto who showed me what to eat and with an awesome workout regimen.
BEN: That’s awesome. Sounds like you have a great team and system in place for success. Your toughest competition in that SoCal five-man lineup was 2nd place finisher, Sergio Hernandez. Sergio ended up beating you out in three rounds… Conditioning, Posing/ Presentation and Model Walk at Finals. And you beat him out in the other three categories: Muscularity, Symmetry and Suit. What was it like going up against that class and specifically battling it out against Sergio?
KARLOS: To be honest, I didn’t know what to expect being that it was my very first show. It was an honor to be on stage battling it out with Sergio. He came in very lean, looking awesome. I have a ton of respect for the guy and all the other guys on stage with us.
BEN: After SoCal you did not waste any time as you kept pushing it and hit the stage for your Pro Debut about six weeks later. I was really excited to see that, as I knew you were ready to go against the Pros and hold your own. Also, so often we see guys wait months or even a year before competing as a Pro. So, again, it is good to see a new Pro jump right into the mix. What was it like going against the Pros in AZ?
KARLOS: Well, I figured I worked so hard to get in shape, it just made sense to keep the ball rolling and fine tune for a Pro Debut. Plus, I was super excited to compete again. Competing against top IPL Pros was a bit intimidating, especially this group of elite competitors. But extremely exciting and a blast. I really love how all the IPL community supports each other.
BEN: Well, it’s great having you in the league. I look forward to seeing you at the SoCal Pro/Am next month and having you on the judging panel. When will we see you back on the IPL stage?
KARLOS: Well, after the Arizona show, I took a short break. But, it was a little longer than planned. [laughs] Anyway, back to training. If I feel I’m ready, I will be at the Sacramento show. If not, then I will do Arizona in October. But, hopefully sooner than later. I’m choosing to make this a lifestyle, always training and staying on point with my diet, year-round. GAINZ
